Suckout? Suck this!!!
zilbob
Ok, here is the situation. I play in my standard home game most Wednesday nights and in my last session I had this situation. I am in middle position with King Jack suited. I raise to 3 times the big blind. The player to my left calls and so does the big blind, so there are 3 players in the hand, my hand at this point is not looking so strong with 2 callers. The flop comes Jack and 2 lower cards, rainbow. The big blind, who happens to be the short stack, bets the pot. At this point I am feeling pretty good about my hand with top pair second kicker, and 2 people calling my raise. I cannot put them on 2 pair with the board the way it is or with these players the short stack would have almost certainly have re-raised all-in preflop with any pocket pair especially one that could beat my Jacks. In an attempt to isolate the raiser and decrease the chance of a suckout by one of these players I re-raise all-in with the hand that I feel pretty confident is the best hand at this point. The third player in the hand at this point takes some time to think about his move which has me a little worried as the whole reason for my all-in play was to move him out of the pot. He finally said screw it and calls me and the original raiser folds. At this point we turn over our cards to discover that my Pair of Jacks with King kicker is indeed the best hand on the table as my opponent turns over Queen Jack. I have him dominated and I am about a 85% favorite to take down the pot. I also out chip my opponent so have no chances of going home from this hand so I am feeling great, looking to almost double up my stack and get one step closer to the money. Then we get to the turn and as high as I am on my playing skills at this point it is nothing that the filthy dirty whore of a Queen can’t fix. She shows her face to us right at this moment and kicks me right in the sac. I am facing certain death from this blow as even though I am not out I am severely crippled in pride, spirit and above all else chip count. I can feel the urge to go on tilt and then flip the table over and storm off with my piggy bank swelling inside me. With only 3 outs in the deck that can save me, I have about a 6% chance at this point and my opponent has all but taken me out with this suckout. The river brings with it hope however as I still have a chance, so you’re telling me there’s a chance!!!!! So I wait, with the anticipation and prayers of a virgin on prom night, for one of my cowboys to hit the felt with the final card to come. However with little chance of that happen I am counting my remaining chips trying to figure out how many blinds I have left and what the minimum cards are I am looking for at this point to push all-in again and attempt to salvage something out the debacle this tourney style home game has become. After what seems like an eternity the dealer final flips over the river card and I see PAINT!!!!! My chances have gone from 7% to 50%, the heart starts to race and as I inspect further I see a beautiful looking King with an axe smiling up at me, one-upping my opponent’s suckout with a larger one of my own, I think got a cramp from it. So with this beautiful “that’s poker” situation I was able to almost double my stack, send someone home and have the satisfaction of a suckout to win this “mine bigger than yours is” game we were playing. Final parting words, Sorry buddy, that’s poker, thanks for the chips DONKEY!!!!!!
